Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (BTRC) has banned the sale of SIMs by Grameenphone, the country’s top mobile phone operator, for failing to provide quality services (voice calls and internet).
After approving the matter on Wednesday afternoon, BTRC sent a directive to Grameenphone. Grameenphone will not be able to sell new SIMs until further notice. The operator will be able to sell new SIMs only if it can ensure quality service to the customers.

Confirming the ban, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar said, “Despite our efforts, we have not seen any initiative to improve the quality of Grameenphone’s service.” They will increase the customer base, but not the quality of service – it cannot be allowed to happen. Until they improve the quality of service and improve it to a satisfactory level, there will be a ban on the sale of Grameenphone SIMs.
BTRC vice-chairman Subrata Roy Maitra said the operator was not able to provide quality services. They will not be able to sell the SIM until further notice.
